Bignasco, Switzerland
2021
Designed in collaboration with Stefano Marzo
Bignasco, located in the scenic Maggia Valley, offers expansive north-south views across the valley and an east-west panorama framed by mountains, highlighted by a waterfall to the east. The project site serves as a focal point, marking the transition from Bignasco’s built environment to the untouched southern valley. The design comprises two volumes that follow the landscape’s contours.
The first, a longitudinal volume along Via Centro Sportivo to the north, contains most program functions except for the pools and technical areas. This structure defines the New Tourist Center’s northern boundary while natural terraces shape the spaces to the east and west, with the river providing a natural barrier to the south. The block serves as both a boundary and a buffer for the residential area to the north, offering noise and visual protection.
The pool volume, oriented toward the valley’s depth, directs views southward. Its placement divides the former soccer field into a sports area to the west (with the beach volleyball court, children’s pool, and views from the restaurant and fitness area) and a relaxation area to the east, visible from the spa. In summer, the pools create a transition between these zones.
All program functions, except technical areas, are on the ground level, facilitating easy movement, management, and oversight. The main entrance on Via Centro Sportivo leads to the ticket area, from which visitors can access the fitness area and restaurant to the west or changing rooms, pool, and spa to the east.
Staff areas are strategically placed at the block’s center to optimize management. Independent volumes within the structure create light-filled spaces for circulation, waiting, and relaxation. This layout supports independent use of the center’s various functions with the option for separate access points.
