Prototype for an alpine Bivouac
Alpine Refuge
Competition
Trento, Italy
2023
Civil Engineer: Franco Melocchi
The project's goal is to embody the intrinsic importance of the bivouac, providing optimal accommodation with an extreme economy of means. This focus on essentials naturally integrates the design into the Dolomite landscape.
The form of the project draws from the iconic ‘hut,’ a shape that is instantly recognizable and conveys a sense of familiarity and hospitality. This design also offers practical advantages: the 45° roof pitches efficiently shed snow, allowing for smaller and lighter structural profiles. Inside, the high ridge line creates a spacious feeling within a compact volume.
Externally, the structure will be entirely clad in yellow-painted steel to ensure high visibility in all weather conditions and to honor the Fiamme Gialle corps. From a distance, the small windows subtly play with scale and proportions, making the bivouac appear larger. Inside, these windows provide a 360° view, allowing users to remain visually connected to the surrounding landscape.
The interior will include 10 beds, arranged with three beds on the shorter sides and four along the longer side, maximizing the height afforded by the pitched roof. Wood, the primary material used, enhances the sense of warmth and contributes to thermal insulation.
